SPAIN NON-LUCRATIVE VISA

Spain’s Non-Lucrative Visa (NLV) is a long-stay residence
visa/residence pathway for non-EU/EEA/Swiss nationals who want to
live in Spain without carrying out any gainful work or professional
activity. It is commonly used by retirees and financially independent
individuals supported by passive/foreign income and/or savings.

Who this programme is for:

  • Retirees with pension income.
  • Families supported by foreign rental income, dividends, or other passive income.
  • Applicants with substantial liquid savings and a clear non-working plan.

Key requirements:

To qualify, applicants generally need to show:

  • Non-EU/EEA/Swiss nationality.
  • Intention to reside in Spain without working.
  • Sufficient financial means (IPREM-based threshold).
  • Private health insurance valid in Spain meeting consulate
    requirements

Financial requirement (IPREM benchmark)

Spain’s NLV financial requirement is commonly assessed against IPREM
(Indicador Público de Renta de Efectos Múltiples). Many consulates apply
the following benchmark:

  • Main applicant: 400% of IPREM
  • Each additional family member/dependent: +100% of IPREM

Using the 2026 IPREM monthly reference (€600), this is commonly
interpreted as:

  • Mainapplicant: €2,400/month (≈ €28,800/year using 12 payments)
  • Each dependent: +€600/month (≈ +€7,200/year using 12 payments)

Processing timelines

Timelines vary significantly by consulate, seasonality, and document
readiness. Typical planning ranges:

  • Document preparation: 2–6+ weeks (police clearance issuance,
    apostille/legalization, sworn translations, insurance documents)
  • Consular processing: varies by consulate and workload
  • Post-approval/in-Spain steps: appointment availability varies by province (TIE timelines depend on local capacity)

FAQs

Does the NLV allow me to work in Spain?
No—the NLV is designed for residence without gainful work. If work (including remote work) is planned, evaluate alternative routes.
Can I include family members?
Often yes, but the definition of eligible dependents and evidence required can differ by consulate. Each additional family member increases the financial threshold.
How long does it take?
Document pr eparation commonly takes weeks; consular processing varies significantly. Plan buffers for police certificates, apostilles, translations, and appointment availability.
